As winter wraps us in its cold embrace, the temptation of a warm shower becomes hard to resist.
While these soothing showers provide comfort, they can also cause skin problems if not approached with care.
Dr. Priyanka Sharma, Director and Chief Dermatologist at V6 Clinics, along with Dr. Preeti Yadav, Expert Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon in Gurgaon, offer valuable insights on how warm showers affect winter skin and share tips for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated during the colder months!
The Drawback of Warm Showers
Dr. Priyanka Sharma explains that extended exposure to hot water can remove the skin of its natural oils, weakening its protective barrier and worsening conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. Dr. Preeti Yadav also points out that while hot water feels soothing, it can lead to dry, irritated skin, causing itching and disrupting the skin’s natural defenses.
Winter Skin Struggles
Winter's low humidity levels dry out the air, both indoors and outdoors, leaving the skin feeling tight, flaky, and more susceptible to cracking. Hot showers worsen this issue by making the skin even more sensitive and lackluster.
Tips to Protect Your Skin This Winter
To ensure your skin stays healthy throughout the chilly season, here are some essential tips for your winter shower routine:
Control Water Temperature and Duration: Dr. Sharma recommends using lukewarm water (37-40°C or 98-104°F) and keeping showers to 5–10 minutes to prevent moisture loss. Dr. Yadav advises using warm, not hot, water to avoid skin irritation.
Choose Gentle Cleansers: Opt for pH-balanced cleansers, syndets, or bath oils as Dr. Sharma suggests. Dr. Yadav adds that body washes containing shea butter or hydrating ingredients help lock in moisture.
Pat Dry, Don’t Rub: Both experts recommend gently patting your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing, to protect the outer skin layer and avoid irritation.
Moisturize Immediately After Showering: Apply a moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out of the shower. Dr. Sharma suggests products with ceramides, urea, and natural moisturizing factors, while Dr. Yadav recommends lotions with aloe vera and hyaluronic acid for deep hydration.
Hydrate from Within: Dr. Sharma highlights that omega-3-rich foods like flaxseeds, walnuts, and fatty fish help maintain skin suppleness. Dr. Yadav advises drinking plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside.
Bonus Winter Skin Care Tips
Use a Humidifier: Both experts suggest using a humidifier indoors to combat the drying effects of heating systems.
Wear Comfortable Clothing: Dr. Yadav recommends loose, natural fabrics to minimize irritation on your skin.
Don’t Skip Sunscreen: Dr. Sharma stresses the importance of sunscreen year-round, even in winter, to shield against harmful UV rays.
Protect Your Lips: To prevent chapped lips, Dr. Sharma advises using a nourishing lip balm regularly.
Warm showers can be a winter treat, as long as you're mindful of the temperature and follow these expert tips to maintain your skin’s health!
